New name to know: Legres artisan boots
I had a DM chat with a Twitter buddy a few weeks ago, who sent me a photo of some extremely chic riding boots she was trying on in Matchesfashion. “What do you think?’ she asked. “OMG, where from? Buy them!” I insisted. I had no idea who Legres were then, but now I do.
It’s an anonymous ‘London-based collective that works with traditional Italian artisans to create timeless footwear staples’, according to the Matchesfashion blurb and it’s oh so very me! Price point is around the £500-£600 mark, which I’d say is normal these days for a boot of this quality. My favourites are the Biker and Western boots (I love a small western heel), followed by the Riding boot. The Western boot is slightly ‘waisted’ which is better for wearing under a slim trouser, and I love the non-rugged straps on the Biker. The Riding boot has a more elevated heel than average, giving it just a hint more ‘fashion’ zhuzh.
This ‘do one thing well’ refined fashion concept is a reaction to the vast choice and sensory overload happening right now. (The FT covers it in detail here – pesky pay wall, sorry!) Meanwhile, Legres’ minimal branding idea reminds me of early-days Vetements, which also started life as a mysterious collective, with no public figurehead. “There are so many misleading stories and characters nowadays that we decided to be clear and direct and create something for the people who are mainly interested in design and quality,” Legres told Vogue.
