Coming soon: Honey F***ing Dijon X Dover Street Market
Is Adrian Joffe a secret clubber? I love the idea of him letting off steam at Berghain, perhaps togged out in a combo of Rick, Raf and Comme. And now he can wear the merch of one of his (and my) favourite DJs, Honey Dijon.
“I knew of Honey — I’d heard her play and I was a fan — and I met her when she DJed at our after party at the Met gala,” says Comme des Garçons International and Dover Street Market International president Joffe in a WWD article (paywall) announcing the launch of Honey Dijon, the brand. “This just happened naturally. We just said: how about doing something together?”
Honey Fucking Dijon will launch with the backing of Comme des Garcons as part of Adrian Joffe’s new Dover Street Market Paris concept, an umbrella initiative that will incubate new brands and help them grow organically. The Honey Fucking Dijon line (from $80) will initially include logo T-shirts and accessories; wallets, headphone and USB stick carriers, as well as record bags. The collection will launch on 5th October in London before moving onto New York and Los Angeles.
Quick back story on Honey Dijon (aka Honey Redmond). She grew up in Chicago, clubbing in the eighties and befriending soon-to-be house legends including Derrick Carter and Danny Tenaglia. As her own DJing star rose, she started making fashion friends on the New York clubbing circuit after moving there in the 90s. “Everyone I have met in fashion has been through DJing in nightclubs,” she told WWD.
Fashion and music are forever enmeshed; my closest friend networks come from meeting interestingly turned out people on various podiums dancefloors over the years. Fashion-wise, the 90s was my favourite decade and judging by her Pinterest, Honey’s too.
Famously transgender, the Kreuzberg-based DJ is philosophical about her relatively recent fame and resultant opportunities. “Some people wouldn’t necessarily be having DJs like myself [play] if it wasn’t cool. It’s like, ‘we have to have a woman on the bill, we have to have a trans-person.’ So people who might never have had an opportunity are getting one.”
Back to Dover Street Market, as well as the Dover Street Market Paris incubation concept, there’s also a new ‘satellite’ store launching in Paris. ‘Dover Street Parfum Market‘ opens on 2nd October. So my next question is, when are we getting Honey Dijon, the fragrance?
