Shop the post: the linen edit
It’s beginning to feel a lot like… linen season.
I’m thinking crease-front cream trousers, Bermuda shorts and of course, what would summer be without a marquee-sized linen shirt?
For once, this is something the high street does really well if you stick to tried-and-trusted menswear-inspired shapes. I have wide pleat-fronted linen trousers in navy and cream from COS still going strong after three years (don’t forget to iron the crease back in after every wear), while Arket*, & Other Stories* and J.Crew* also have timeless versions available.
Uniqlo has the best colour options for big linen shirts*, but COS is a good bet for a short-sleeve boxy cut – especially in this vibrant orange* (below).
If you’re not in the market for a voluminous shirt, then look out for Muji’s linen stand collar shirt (especially in the stripe here). And as an eco-conscious alternative to linen, what about hemp? It has a lower environmental impact than linen or cotton (using minimal fertiliser and water) as well as antibacterial and UV blocking benefits. Muji’s hemp shorts and shirt have a linen-like feel, while hemp knitwear is a great lightweight option for travel. (Wear with Muji’s cult black trainers and ‘right angle’ socks.) P.S. it looks like Muji has 20% off hemp this month.
There are a lot of linen shorts out there – from COS*, Uniqlo* and & Other Stories* for starters (or Chloe* if money is no object). If you want something a little smarter yet still with that slightly crumpled effect, then seersucker is the way to go. Look for dark navy or black* and team with these sweet flat Mary-Janes* from Vibi Venezia.
