Dries van Noten AW17
I watched the Dries van Noten AW17 live stream on Facebook Live and enjoyed the interaction and running commentary from fellow viewers. It was wholly positive except for some anti-fur comments. I loved seeing my fave 90s models – Cecelia Chancellor, Emma Balfour, Amber Valetta, Kirsten Owen – owning the catwalk in Dries’ boxy blazers and slouchy denim (with ankle socks and chunky heels or winklepickers – fab!).
This was his hundredth fashion show and garnered a well deserved standing ovation at the end. I think the key to his success is consistency and the right balance of creativity and commerciality. His collections have an identifiable Dries look, but never seem to date, yet always manage to look current. And I love that he refuses to bow to certain pressures, such as focusing on bags and shoes or basing his company in Paris. Interestingly, this collection seemed to convey the season’s ‘powerful woman’ message clearly without resorting to theatrics or shouty slogan tees.
