Positive beauty: Chantecaille’s no make-up make-up eye trio
For day to day, I’m all about a cream eyeshadow. Chanel’s Illusion d’Ombre in Rouge-Gorge is my go-to when I want to look ‘awake’ (it’s orange in the pot but more of a tan wash on the lid) and the cream-stick formulations from Bobbi Brown and Chanel are amazing for giving a little iridescence for evening. I just put them on with my finger and blend.
A lot of powder shadows can look too flat (which makes me look drained), or else they’re way too shimmery (just naff). And I very rarely go near anything labelled ‘matte’. I did want to give the Chantecaille Mermaid Eye Matte trio (£80) a go though.
This is a dream trio of three matte shadows; a creamy vanilla (Lion), a soft grey (Elephant) and a rich, smoky brown (Bee). You can play around with the trio to create the level of intensity and light/shade definition you want but to be honest, I’ve been sticking to just the brown Bee shadow for my morning 5-minute face when I’m inevitably running late.
It’s difficult to pinpoint why this is perfect other than it’s an ideal ‘no make-up make-up’ shadow. I take the teeniest amount, blend with a finger or the Zoeva Soft Definer Brush and add a coat of mascara to top outer lashes only. What this does is just define the eyes enough to make you look done but not ‘made up’.
The warm brown shade is beautiful and the consistency is creamy-smooth. There’s zero drag, fallout or patchiness, no hint of creased lid and it doesn’t fade. Chantecaille shadows are famed for their use of botanical ingredients (hence the high price point) and are cruelty free.
Other than being supremely useful, there’s a nice theme to this trio. Chantecaille is very much about celebrating women’s achievements and the Mermaid Eye Matte trio is inspired by three female conservationists working to protect endangered animals in Africa. Thus 5% of proceeds from this trio will be donated to the Elephants and Bees Foundation, Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, and The Lion Guardians.
Later this year Chantecaille is launching a function on its site that donates a portion of your purchase price to a cause of your choice, which is an emerging philanthropic trend in luxury retail. Stay tuned!
