Maskne: how to treat face mask acne
News just in, ‘Maskne’ (face mask acne) is a thing. It’s caused from the friction of masks rubbing against the skin, as well as oil, sweat and make-up co-mingling, and wearing a mask too many times without washing it. Remember people, masks are the new pants!*
The New York Times and the Evening Standard have published articles on how to combat ‘maskne’ but I know not everyone subscribes, so here are my takeaways.
HOW TO TREAT FACE MASK ACNE
*Choose a 100 percent cotton mask to allow the skin to breathe
*Keeping skin well moisturised will cut down on chafing
*Cut down on skincare products, keeping active serums like retinol for night time
*Keep skin clean and hydrated with microbiome-friendly products to help strengthen the skin’s natural barrier – Gallinée Prebiotic Foaming Facial Cleanser* (£13.90) and Murad prebiotic 4-in-1 cleanser* (£38) are recommended. But always follow with moisturiser*
*Consider going without make-up
*Use an over-the-counter benzoyl peroxide treatment on the spots, starting with a 2.5 or 5 percent concentration. Or a mild salicylic acid from The Ordinary* or Typology
*Persistent maskne might not be caused directly by the mask but by stress. Psycho-dermatology is a real thing, so follow the brand Disciple (founded by psychotherapist Charlotte Ferguson) for products* and advice
I can’t help but wonder, how long til a beauty brand formulates face masks impregnated with salicylic acid to remedy the maskne problem?
