Beauty how-to: Summer Haze

If you loved the hazy painterly mood of our latest #drgpetitdejeuner shoot, hair and make-up artist Niki Black is here with a handy how-to beauty breakdown. We shot on a balmy August weekend, portraying that particularly delicious post-summer mood just before everything cools down into autumn. We wanted a look that complemented the romance of a summer garden, while having an element of casual realness that was easy to achieve.

Niki says… What a great day I had shooting for Disneyrollergirl on location in a beautiful garden bursting with perfect hydrangeas. I had the pleasure of creating a 70’s-summer inspired cool girl look for our models Ella and Bethany. As the day was particularly hot, skincare was very important. For both models I cleansed the skin with Bioderma micellar water and applied La Roche-Posay Hydra Intense UV Legere with SPF 20. For the body I used Institut Esthederm Adaptasun Protective Silky Body Mist. It dried in quickly which was great and the girls’ skin didn’t go red in the sun at all.

Hydration is key to long lasting make up in the heat, so for an extra boost of illuminating radiance I added Elemis Flash Balm which also acts as a great primer. One of my favourite products to use is the Sisley Nutritive Lip Balm, it’s so rich that it instantly hydrates. I applied this to both models with no lip colour for a more relaxed natural look.

For Ella (below), I used Laura Mercier Flawless Fluide Foundation in Ivory, which suited her pale skin. This foundation is high performance as it’s sweat, humidity and water resistant.
The eye colour is one of my favourites this season, Kiko’s Smart Colour eyeshadow no 27.
I applied the eyeshadow by patting the colour along the lower lid and then blended upwards and out in small round circular motions blending to a fade using a brush over the rest of the eye. I left the eyelashes natural to keep the look from becoming too ‘pretty’.

For the cheeks I gave a light dusting of MAC’s Dollymix Sheertone Shimmer Blush and I left the lips natural, just applying the Sisley Lip Balm.
I prepped Ella’s gorgeous red hair using Bumble & Bumble Invisible Oil Heat/UV Primer, which apart from smelling amazing, is particularly good for hydrating. To keep the hair natural, I curled around the front of the face then brushed it through to keep the curls soft.

For Bethany, I used Laura Mercier Flawless Fluide Foundation in Shell, bringing out the warm tones in her skin. For the eyes I dusted over some muted tones of Brown Bliss from Stila and then added Sandstone in her crease line for definition, which were both great at bringing out the colour of her eyes. I then added Kiko High Pigment Wet and Wry yellow eyeshadow in no19 on the bottom lid, again leaving the eyelashes natural to keep the look fresh and modern.

I brushed the cheeks lightly with MAC Peachtwist Sheertone Shimmer Blush, giving great cheek definition and leaving only a hint of shimmer. I finished with the Sisley Lip balm on the lips.
For Bethany’s hair I used another favourite of mine, Tigi’s Bed Head Superstar spray to hold the waves in place after curling with big hair tongs. Finally, I brushed it through for a soft bouncy look using L’Oreal Elnett Satin Hairspray to give a natural hold.
