Why should you use a facial oil?

+GOLFADEN MD FLEURESSENCE BOTANICAL CELL OIL

The aromatherapy balms I loved for summer have been replaced by a whole load of facial oils for winter. They serve various purposes, from encouraging the nightly facial massage, to adding active natural ingredients to nourish the skin overnight, to simply being a calming feel-good ritual to end the day.

Buy why and when should you use facial oils? I generally use one at night because the earlier ones were quite heavy and prone to leaving a rather-too-glowy finish. But the newer varieties are really not greasy at all so can be used whenever you want an extra boost of hydration. Facial oils tend to be made of natural (and often organic) ingredients and the different types of oils target different skin concerns. So whether you suffer from dry skin, sensitive skin, dullness, or even acne-prone skin, there’s likely a facial oil to suit. The biggest plus however is simply that they’re oils and so they can give your skin a much bigger moisture boost than your regular moisturiser.

I’ve been rotating these because I just love the ritual of using facial oils. The Goldfaden MD is my most used; I think I was sent it to try in March. It came just as I finished my Sanctuary Spa Therapist’s Secret Facial Oil, which is another excellent oil (at a great price. Buy it HERE).

Facial oils Goldfaden MD Fleuressence Botanical Cell Oil and Liz Earle Superskin Concentrate For Night

Goldfaden MD Fleuressence Botanical Cell Oil is one of the most expensive oils at £105 for 30ml but I love everything about it. The tall glass bottle feels luxe, the oil is not too thick or runny, there’s just the hint of a scent and it seems to love my skin. I’ve not had a single flake of dry skin since using it. It’s mostly targeted at dry, aging skin and contains a blend of 100% pure active botanicals, fruit extracts and natural oil to help skin cell revitalisation. Buy it HERE.

THE BODY SHOP OILS OF LIFE INTENSELY REVITALISING FACIAL OIL

Why should you use a facial oil?
Despite the OTT name, this does live up to its claims. Targeted at mature skins, its three key ingredients are rosehip seed oil from Chile, camellia seed oil from China and black cumin seed oil from Egypt, all known for their preserving properties. I’ll admit I’ve kind of ignored The Body Shop for a few years, but I really liked the look of the apothecary-style bottle with its rubber pipette and amber nectar. The oil is a lovely consistency – I add two drops into the palm of my hand, rub my hands together, and then press the oil into my face and neck. And then massage. The slightly spicy/herby smell reminds me of Aveda’s anti-humectant pomade – maybe it’s the cumin seed oil? – It’s not unpleasant though. The Body Shop Oils Of Life Intensely Revitalising Facial Oil is £28 for 30ml. Buy it HERE, but check out the home page first for its Black Friday deals, which have started already.

LIZ EARLE SUPERSKIN CONCENTRATE FOR NIGHT

I’m a recent Liz Earle convert. I love the Cleanse & Polish for taking off my make-up and I recently had a facial with the wonderful Abigail James who advises a lighter massage for those with sensitive skin but for everyone else a firm touch will stimulate blood flow. This Liz Earle Superskin Concentrate For Night comes in a wee 10ml rollerball bottle (£21), which is perfect for travel. You roll it straight onto your face and neck, then massage upwards and outwards. This is made from pure plant oils – the key ingredients are organic rosehip oil, argan oil and neroli oil and it’s also heavily lavender scented which I adore. Spending five minutes at the end of the day massaging out my frown lines the day’s stresses is a really nice way to unwind. Buy it HERE.
