Exhibitions to see in 2015: Jean Cocteau and the artist as collector
Two exhibitions I want to see this year…
The first one’s in Paris and is only on for the blink of an eye (January 20 – February 7 2015) so this is wishful thinking really. ‘Jean Cocteau, une donation américaine – Robert Rubin‘ sees forty works from the collection of American art historian Robert Rubin (including collage work and portraits by the likes of Cecil Beaton) shown together at the Pierre Bergé-Yves Saint Laurent Foundation. Entrance is free and that’s about as much info as I can find so far.
Then there’s this gem at the Barbican Art Gallery. Magnificent Obsessions: The Artist as Collector (above, 12 February 2015 – 25 May 2015) (FYI those are Andy Warhol’s cookie jars) should satisfy my interest in collage artists, collectors, hoarders and just general nosiness curiosity in people. According to the blurb, ‘this is the first major exhibition in the UK to present the fascinating personal collections of post-war and contemporary artists. Ranging from mass-produced memorabilia and popular collectibles to one-of-a-kind curiosities, rarefied artefacts, and specimens, these collections provide insight into the inspirations, influences, motives and obsessions of artists.’ More info here.
