Every Street by Nik Hartley
There’s something very reassuring about hairdressers and barber shops. However fast-moving the worlds of fashion and retail, there’s still nothing that beats sitting in that familiar chair and the sound of steel snippers and a good old analogue haircut. I’ve been going to the same hairdressers for over twenty years and it’s become a bit of a community hangout where getting my hair cut is a ritual I look forward to. (Lots more about my particular hairdressers coming soon…)
Photographer Nik Hartley captures the barber shop vibes in his book Every Street, a portrait project that took him to his home town Nelson in North-east Lancashire. Every Street is the address of Stylz, where barber Haroon ‘Harris’ Yousef tends to the heads of the local Asian community. Over three days, Hartley captured local kids post-haircut, documenting a time, a place, and a certain sense of youthful pride…
