London Fashion Week AW11: Margaret Howell

What I loved about Margaret Howell’s show (and Margaret Howell in general) is that this collection could have been shown any time between 1990 and now. The cable sweaters, hooded schoolgirl coats, cropped trouser suits and pinafores are clothes that go beyond fashion-fashion – it’s really about the minute tweaks and styling details that bring them into the present moment. Far from ‘fierce’, this collection chimes with the current wave of understated female fashion with a more boyish bent. So cord trousers, tweed jackets and flat lace-ups are given just enough gentle femininity with belts, blouses and hairbands stretched over knotty buns.
