Introducing: Modern Love
Back in April when I took part in Liberty’s Best of British Open Call, I had no idea what to expect. Sat on a ‘speed buying’ panel with Associate Womenswear Buyer Stephanie Jones, we zipped through dozens of designer hopefuls, so many of whom said it was their dream to be stocked at Liberty. It was quite the eye-opening experience. There was plenty of memorable talent but it wasn’t easy to find a perfect fit. In order to take on a new supplier at Liberty (or I guess any store), an existing one has to go, so the newbie has to be justified.
We were both immediately impressed with Modern Love, a print based label whose distinctive dresses are cut from beautiful swathes of abstract printed silk. Designer Sarah Arnett’s name rang a bell for me – I remembered her scarves from years before. The designs stood out as an obvious match for Liberty – strong, unique prints, wearable shapes, high quality finishing and commercial appeal (at the right price). At the end of our day, Stephanie and I agreed that Modern Love was our favourite.
Two weeks later I received an excited email from Modern Love saying they had an appointment with Stephanie, followed by a further email to say they had written their first Liberty order. Fast forward several weeks and Modern Love’s AW11 collection has just launched exclusively at Liberty. Cue delighted faces all round…
