I don’t write about dresses much in my book The New Garconne – How to be a Modern Gentlewoman, but there is a small mention and I’ve noticed a recent uptick in dresses suitable for non-frou-frou girls. The kind of dresses Miuccia Prada might wear, with ankle socks and Mary Janes with a mannish overcoat on top, or that look great with Chloe stack heeled boots, a blazer and a shaggy fringe.
On the high street, & Other Stories has nailed this look, and it goes without saying that the Japanese get it right without even trying – in particular Comme, Toga and Sacai.
Egg is another great source (I love their website) and Farfetch have loads of excellent vintage finds that you won’t see anywhere else. Wear with sculptural jewels, lace-up Oxfords and a skin scent…
