Buy it now: If you’re thinking about mini mules
Despite my long-standing aversion to mules, I’m inexplicably attracted to Prada’s SS24 mini mules. They’re now available online and are likely to be taking over your IG feed adorning the soles of the Fashion Month street style set imminently.
Mule advocate Manolo Blahnik once said, “When you walk in mules, you walk a bit differently. It’s very sexy to me”. Maybe it’s the concentration and slow walking pace required to keep the pesky things from flying off your feet, but I do find high mules to be high maintenance and very ‘male gaze’. Maybe that’s the point.
So, the mini mule is a good compromise. Prada’s jewel-toned satin confections (top and below) are lovely for spring evenings (soon come) or wedding guest season, while Carven’s low grey leather mule (below) is the casual day choice with an oversize trench and crop true blue jeans – very Carolyn Bessette-core.
Of course, if you want the look without the trip hazard, there’s always the flat variety – ideally with a Mary-Jane strap. I mentioned the Essēn Mary-Jane ages ago, but Malone Souliers* and Zimmermann* (below) have a number of alternatives. Finally, for the mule-adjacent option, it’s slingback season at Saint Laurent*, Toteme* and Jil Sander*. White slingbacks* with black tights are all the rage, but they’re cute with an ankle sock too.

I am afraid even the most beautiful or comfortable mules only work if you stand still, sit pretty or just pose for a photo. The moment you start walking, then the shuffling around, the slipper-noise against your heel, your toes gripping to keep the mule on your foot, all the stylishness and glamour of the mule becomes the same of the slippers you wear with your dressing gown when you get up in the morning! (I am Italian, apologies for my bad English)
