SS23 trend report: the beauty retail playground returns.@Glossier recently opened its new SoHo flagship with a big bang – putting fun and novelty front and centre with a merch store, funfair-style claw machines and selfie opportunities at every turn. @jonesroadbeauty also opened its first store earlier this month, a hands-on, touch-and-try destination with cross-generational appeal. And @sephorauk finally opened in London’s Westfield White City. No I haven’t been yet – waiting for the swarms to subside – but suffice to say it’s created with discovery and excitement in mind. Play, experience and buzzy brands are at the heart of the @sephora retail strategy. As a customer, I expect a surprise each time I visit a physical store, a compulsion to buy there and then rather than wait to buy online. Have you experienced any of these beauty openings? There’s definitely a synergy between a certain type of upscale American designer and stores that think they’re art galleries. We’ve seen it from The Row, we saw it (briefly) from Raf-era Calvin Klein, and now it’s the turn of @Khaite_ny, whose first store opened last week in SoHo.These stores specialise in uber-intimidating, sparsely populated interiors where you have nowhere to hide. Unsurprisingly, they’re also the playground of the Low Key Rich Bitch (think Frieze-frequenting, old Celine-wearing gallerist or art collector). Or the woman who wants to be her.
