What I loved at the Dover Street Market AW09 press day
Comme’s surrealist military coats (above)
Junya Watanabe’s polished pointed girls’ Oxfords
Lanvin’s mens wool poloshirts with grosgrain collar
Sacai’s girls’ underwear and mens utilitarian nylon and knitwear combos
Undercover’s punk graphic tees
Lanvin’s Little Black Velvet Dress – long sleeved with a wee train – heavenly!
Joe Casely Hayford’s silk scarves
H by Harris’ quilted suede laptop case
Dashing Tweeds’ reflective capes
I didn’t dare take pictures having been told off for using a pen to write notes. “Sorry you can’t take notes,” “But I’m press,” “Ok, but you can’t use a pen, you’ll have to use a pencil,” “Why?” “For health and safety reasons.” Jeez!

Pencil! Ha how I laughed that's like old school sports journalism! Even the courts allow pens for journos. Mmm to pretentious for my liking but the clothes sound divine as ever.

Silly policy about the pens…but visiting DSM, as ever, remains one of my dreams (those coats!!!)

Can anybody tell me how the invitations for for press days work? I have just started writting for a small magazine and seemed to be missing a lot. Do I contact organizers to ask for an invitation? How would I know about the press day in advance then? disneyrollergirl, I follow your blog and cant find a better place to ask these things. Sorry, if thats a wrong question.

For health and safety reasons, definitely, because I would have stabbed someone in the eye with my pen after hearing that b.s. And that would have been unhealthy and unsafe.

Hey Alex! Not a 'wrong' question at all! Pretty much all PR agencies and inhouse PRs have press days. Usually in April/May and Oct/Nov plus the Christmas and Cruise ones in July. I guess once you're established, PRs know you anyway so you get invited to everything. Until then you have to do a bit of PR for yourself. Send them the magazine or some of the articles/shoots you've done which show that you operate in their market. If you are starting out, you could even introduce yourself and ask to do a showroom appointment in which you can then schmooze face-to-face. Unfortunately, like anything, it's a bit chicken and egg initially. PRs don't want to know you until you can do something for them (i.e. give them good coverage), but you can't move up the editorial ranks until you have some decent work under your belt and you need PRs to help you with that. Typicial! Starting out with smaller designers is a good idea in that case as they are grateful for the coverage. Does that help?

Yes! It helps a lot! Thank you rollergirl. Basically, everything seems to be just the way I was imagining. Mmm, I will try to work on PR connections then. Thank you again, it's been a pleasure to get a reply from you.

Health and safety reasons? What complete and utter crud. Sometimes fashion is so pretentious it makes me sick. *barf*

Wait, you were at their PRESS day and they said you couldn't take notes? Thick or what? I honestly can't bear the staff attitude in there.. a few of them are nice, but most seem to think that just because they get employee discount on Junya and Comme they also have some sort of deity status.
