Transitional neutrals: camel and red

Mat de Chanel Clair Obscur les 4 ombres
We may have experienced 23-degree temperatures and cloudless blue skies this weekend but the leaves have turned claret and the forecast is cooler. Time to shift into my autumn default mode of camel and red. Chanel is on board to ease the transition with its Le Mat de Chanel collection, including Clair Obscur, an all-matte quad of browns, complete with matte-black casing. (Is it me or is everything matte at the moment?)

Anyway, this fudge-y quad is a no-brainer if you’re going for classic grown up grooming – just pat a lighter brown over the lid and a darker one along the lash line. It’s completely idiot-proof; you can do it with clean fingers. All I add is eye pencil, mascara, brow gel, cream blush blended almost to nothing (mine’s an old James Kaliardos for MAC one, but I also rate Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge) and tinted or clear lip balm (I like ‘Motif Tangelo’ from & Other Stories or this multi balm from ECooking). And to ramp thing up a notch, Chanel’s Le Vernis Mat velvet-finish matte red nails. (BTW, if you suffer from less-than-smooth cuticles, Gelcream has some great, um, tips…)

Having just Kon Mari’ed my wardrobe, I’ve stripped my uniform back to basics. It consists of Arket denim, & Other Stories merino and cashmere knits, my Werthers Orignials-coloured Church’s Derbies and this Mallet & Co camel calfskin tote with red nappa lining. To accessorise: my new Uniform Wares watch and Mr DRG’s old Burberry check scarf that he shrunk in a hot wash and handed down to me. Happy autumn!
