Love the proportions of these McQ AW15 menswear pieces and the styling which to me nods to 1980s clubbers and subcultures. The MA1 and denim jacket hark back to the kids at the legendary Wag Club, while the supersized culottes layered over trousers remind me of the new romantic days of Billy’s and Taboo (“Would you let yourself in?”). Love the new McQ campaign, shot by Karim Sadli. McQ has been up and down for me, I find sometimes the collections are super-cool and other times they dip too far into commercial territory. I have kept some of the earlier printed look books (I don’t think they make them any more) and they really capture the essence of McQ which for me is steeped in outsider-y youth culture with a very British feel. It wasn’t the mainline and so understandably expectations may have been low. The McQ label had become known for wearable pieces, lots of print and jersey, with McQueen motifs to appeal to a younger, less cash-rich customer. McQueen recently bought back its own license with the intention to design McQ inhouse and focus on the rebellious youthful codes of tartan, punk, denim, kilts and other signatures we associate with the British brand.
