Margaret Howell

London Fashion Week: Margaret Howell SS22

Alas, no Margaret Howell SS22 show this LFW season so a showroom visit had to suffice. No great hardship there though, as the showroom is situated at the back of the beautiful Wigmore Street store. I averted my eyes from new season Shetland knits and cotton khakis to focus attention on the new collection. Recent seasons have seen Howell embracing slightly more adventurous proportions and styling cues, as well as more ‘editorial’-style photography. I love it. My top 5 takeaways…

The perfect ten fashion items of all time

The Ten - Lauren Cochrane

If you’re someone who loves to intellectualise fashion, then Lauren Cochrane’s new book, The Ten: The Stories Behind the Fashion Classics* should stoke your fires.

It’s a deeper-than-deep dive into fashion’s enduring classics from the white tee to the blue jean via the mini skirt, Breton top, ballet pump, little black dress, stiletto, hoodie, trench coat and biker jacket. In case you’re thinking, ‘yawwwnnnn, what more is there to know?’, the answer is, plenty. (more…)

On my radar: Plain Goods

Plain Goods

Uh oh.

New e-commerce discovery of heritage-y staples with a mix of classic brands (Margaret Howell cable knits!) and expertly selected vintage finds.

The Plain Goods site and accompanying Connecticut store are run by interior designer Michael DePerno and fashion brand manager, Andrew Fry, and they shoot all the campaigns locally themselves.

Current faves: their own line of men’s Shetland knitwearwear and these Martiniano loafers – such a cool take on the old school penny.

Browse at your peril….

Sunday worship: Margaret Howell SS21

Margaret Howell SS21 LOOK 23

This weekend I would usually be darting across the four corners of London to see what Fashion Week had to offer. Not so this season, which means for once I got to have a lie in on my birthday! But it also means I’ll miss my favourite LFW ritual, congregating on the Sunday worship benches of the Margaret Howell show at Ballet Rambert on the South Bank. Here I’d normally huddle in a sea of buff trench coats with Alyson, Brittany, Dal and Alexis, to appraise next season’s stylistic nuances, while catching up on industry (both fashion and publishing) goss.

In lieu of a Margaret Howell show, we have look book pictures. (more…)
