Gentlewoman style: the big striped shirt
Someone on Twitter kicked off about the myth of the ‘crisp white shirt’. “It’s impractical, doesn’t suit everyone and doesn’t stay white”, they complained. To them I offer: the big striped shirt.
Specifically, this example from Studio Nicholson pre-fall 22, the ‘Bissett stripe shirt’. I remember going through a phase of buying men’s striped office shirts from charity shops to wear open over cotton Hanro camisoles or tied round my waist. It’s a look that served me well. But the Bissett is far superior. It has the menswear hallmarks (Studio Nicholson designer Nick Wakeman is a menswear scholar at heart), but has subtle tweaks for a female shape too – think rear side pleats and a curved hem with a drop at the back.
The Bissett shirt comes in a sage-calico stripe (above) or a nude-cocoa stripe and for the non white shirt haters, there’s a plain ‘ice’ version here. For sale shoppers, there are similar supersized shirts from Studio Nicholson here and here.
