Street style before ‘Street Style’

The SS22 fashion weeks are almost upon us and with them, the return of IRL street style.

I’m reminded of these old shots from the September 1969 issue of Nova magazine, by the sadly departed Steve Hiett, who captured fashion editors in the wild, in the days before they were the main attraction.

What I like about these editors is they look like they’re dressed to work, rather than to be photographed. They look unselfconscious compared to the step-and-repeat street style poses we see these days.

“The point is that fashion editing is a messy job – grovelling around on floors pinning gems, trudging to photography sessions, loaded with clothes like a pack mule, fighting a way through rugger scrums at the entrance to the couture houses – it is extraordinarily difficult to look composed through all this,” notes writer Brigid Keenan.

Caroline Baker and Jennifer Hocking look rather fabulous though. Who do you recognise…?
