The Culture of fashion: an oral history of Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette
Can you believe that Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette film is 15 years old this year? It’s such a fantastic piece of cinema and Vogue thinks so too. It has managed to compile an astonishingly lengthy oral history speaking to the actors, music consultants, costume designers and even Thierry Boutemy, the famous Belgian florist, breaking down every element of inspiration, technical specs and – of course – fashion detail in this over-one-hour long read.
Fun fact: when Emma Miranda Moore and I made our little Dior film, The Awakening a few years ago, we couldn’t resist including a Marie Antionette-esque Converse moment (if you know, you know).
Here’s second unit direct Roman Coppola on that scene:
“It was an in-the-moment idea of, Is this crazy? I think it spoke to the spirit of the movie’s thesis that these are young people. Plus it’s just a fun little detail. I think those Converse [above] belonged to the stand-in we used for Kirsten and we just shot her feet.”
