130 years of Smythson

Smythson Bond Collection Red Maxi Tote

Even thought we know Smythson for its superb diaries and notebooks (mine always get admiring looks and comments), its leather goods now account for almost 80% of the business. This month sees a new collection to mark its 130th anniversary (which was actually last year). The Smythson Bond collection takes its cues from Frank Smythson’s 1902 catalogue and revisits his travel bags, small leather goods and home accessories in beautiful graphic block colours.

I love this classic red Bond Maxi Tote (top, launching 22nd March), with its chunky proportions and accessible pocket and the matching small travel pouch (below). The Smythson Bond Crossbody Bag is perfect for travellers and its trapeze shape gives it a fresh modernity. White is beautiful for holidays but the palm green colourway sounds lovely for the city as an alternative to black.

There are changes afoot at Smythson, with a new creative director incoming from Burberry. Luc Goidadin was previously chief design officer at Burbs and is tasked in bringing Smythson to a younger global customer. I’m guessing this will mean more entry point pieces, so keep your eyes peeled…
