Quote of the day: Audra D. S. Burch on Frederick Law Olmsted

“Restoration and recreation.

Wonder and discovery.

Solitude and community.

And sometimes, simply — sitting still.”
Audra D. S. Burch, The New York Times

This is from a must-see ‘interactive’ essay by Audra D. S. Burch celebrating the landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted who (co)created New York’s Central Park among a number of other important parks. He was inspired by an 1850 visit to England’s Birkenhead Park and its ‘free for all’ mission which influenced his own thinking on what it means to have a park without social or economic barriers.

Ruth Fremson’s accompanying photography brings everything to life, showcasing the huge breadth of freedom, well-being and community afforded by our city parks, which we often take for granted.
