THE DRG STYLE INDEX: Dior, Malin + Goetz, Depop, Nike and more!

Here’s the latest weekly DRG STYLE INDEX ranking, a round-up of the brands and industry stories currently buzzing on my radar…

1. ALL CHANGE AT DIOR (BUT WHAT ABOUT MARIA?)
Kim Jones Dior
The big fashion news of the week was the announcement that Dior’s longtime men’s designer, Kris Van Assche, is departing, and being replaced by Kim Jones, London’s street wear darling, formerly of Louis Vuitton menswear. But the word on my WhatsApps is… where does that leave Maria Grazia Chiuri long term? Will Jones want fuller control across the brand? Watch this space…

2. MEET ME AT MALIN & GOETZ

Disneyrollergirl X Reading in Heels at Malin + Goetz
I’m very happy to be taking part in Reading in Heels’ London event on Thursday evening – a gathering of bookish beauty-philes to support not-for-profit beauty organisation, The Beauty Banks. There will be free Malin & Goetz skin consultations and beauty treatments, plus beauty books curated by scent expert Lizzie Ostrom (AKA Odette Toilette), travel-inspired books selected by journalist Anna Hart and style books chosen by me! It’s all free, but we’re accepting donations of toiletries or tampons to help fight hygiene poverty. See all the deets here.

3. DEPOP DOES PHYSICAL RETAIL

Who said physical retail is dead? In the week that John Lewis opened a new store in Westfield Stratford, reselling app Depop announced a slew of store openings. It’s starting with Los Angeles (just opened), followed by New York later this spring, London sometime this year, and Milan in 2019. As a peer-to-peer marketplace, community meet-ups and events will be a big factor. Now that’s my kind of retail experience.

4. NIKE X SEAN WOTHERSPOON AIR MAX 1/97

Balenciaga Speed trainers? Not my jam. These candy-coloured corduroy Nike Air Max on the other hand; just the right side of fugly. Launching for Nike Air Max Day. Costs hundreds. (Yes, Nike Air Max day is a thing. Nope, no idea who Sean Wotherspoon is…)

In other news…

Is Public Goods like Beauty Pie, but for grooming? I’m tempted…

So the amazing Bill Cunningham apparently left a finished memoir before he passed. It’s all set to be published in September and I can’t wait to devour it. According to Christopher Richards of publisher Penguin Press, ‘it’s a really beautiful story about a young, artistic man finding his way in the city, in a particular kind of bohemian world that doesn’t quite exist anymore.”

How’s this for a fun retail concept? The Store in The Strand has collaborated with Wes Anderson on an exhibition of his new Isle of Dogs film. Just opened, it presents the puppets from the film alongside the set designs, including a full size recreation of the film’s noodle bar, where you can sample chicken and vegetable ramen.
