For Insta-girls: Chanel N°5 L’Eau

Chanel N°5 L'Eau - a new version of the iconic scent aimed at the Instagram generation

While the fragrance spotlight is on Louis Vuitton this month (it’s pushing boldly into the fragrance arena with the launch of seven unique scents), there’s big news from the Chanel camp too.

Chanel N°5 has a cool younger sister about to grab all the attention, a fresh, lighter version of the iconic perfume. The new incarnation ‘Chanel N°5 L’Eau’ is clearly not your mother’s Chanel N°5. This creation (by Olivier Polge) is for the new-gen Chanel customer – she of the ombre hair, Snapchat lenses and Coco Crush jewellery (although she wouldn’t say no to a quilted flap bag either).

While Chanel N°5 Eau Première was a good attempt to hook this millennial customer, it didn’t quite do the trick. I think this one will. It’s an uplifting blend of citrus top notes (lemon, mandarin and orange), with a heart of rose and jasmine, and base notes of sandalwood. It’s less powdery and ‘classic’ than the original but definitely closely related. I have a Chanel N°5 L’Eau scented blotter in my Smythson diary from a few weeks ago and every day I get a delicious waft of it when I turn the pages.

The face of Chanel N°5 L’Eau is Lily-Rose Depp and I think the ad campaign images are just right – timeless yet youthful.

Chanel N°5 L’Eau is released on 19th September in 50ml spray (£68) and 100ml spray (£96).
