We’re all familiar with the iconic brand ‘codes’ of Chanel; the double Cs, the pearls, the tweed, the number 5. But here’s a lesser known one: the suntan. Mademoiselle Chanel arguably made the suntan fashionable – until the 1920s, a tan was associated with peasants and farmers, not refined sophisticates. Now of course, every beauty brand under the, um, sun has its suncare line but if you don’t want to fry, or deal with the mess and fuss of fake tan, Chanel would like you to consider its Healthy Glow Manifesto.
Admittedly a fluffy marketing campaign, it’s a seductive one that offers an all-season approach to looking glowy, healthy and outdoorsy (in the chicest way possible of course). Product-wise, it’s built on the original Les Beiges Healthy Glow Sheer Powder with two updates. I thought Les Beiges powder couldn’t be bettered (it’s my year-round go-to) but the new Healthy Glow Multi-Colour SPF 15 (£39) in two varieties gives you a tri-colour product that can be used as a blush, highlighter, bronzer, or all-swirled-together general glow-giver. How gorgeous do these look?
To go with, Chanel has released Les Beiges All-In-One Healthy Glow Fluid (£34), a tinted moisturiser in six shades. On first squirt it looks and feels like any other tinted moisturiser but the formulation is a powder and gel combo, with hyaluronic acid to give day-long hydration, plus SPF 15.
I can’t not mention the product that I’m possibly most seduced by and that’s the Chanel retractable Kabuki brush (£35). While the healthy glow compacts come with their own half moon brushes, the Kabuki is altogether more effective. And a more luxurious experience too.
