Gentlewoman style: The Cartier Panthère watch is back

Cartier Panthère watch relaunch
Cartier is reviving its Panthère watch, last seen adorning a Joseph-sleeved wrist in the 1990s. Interesting because it appears sales of traditional watches are enjoying a slight upswing in popularity. (Well, at least they’ve stopped tanking – no pun intended.)

I’ve always loved the simplicity of trad, square-faced watches. They’re understated and go with pretty much anything. Clearly, we wear watches as jewellery now, rather than strictly as timepieces, and that’s the approach Cartier wants to take with its relaunch when the Panthère goes on sale in June. The watch (originally launched in 1984) will be offered in yellow, pink or white gold as well as more decorative options such as pink gold interwoven with black enamel. If you’ve never come across a Panthère before, it’s a stunner. Delicate but not fussy, with slinky links that feel as light as air.

In an attempt to upsell to attract a younger customer, Cartier recommends casually layering it with those other iconic pieces, the Love bangle or the Juste un Clou. Well of course it does…
