Agnès b, the wall-whisperer

Jean-Michel Basquiat Plastic Sax

If you happen to be visiting the Festival d’Avignon this summer (lucky you!), be sure to stop by Collection Lambert. A new exhibition, On aime l’art is showing fashion designer Agnès b’s spectacular contemporary art collection, which includes this painting by Jean-Michel Basquiat, who she befriended shortly before he died. (Sotheby’s recently sold Basquiat’s 1982 painting, Untitled, for $110,500,000, the highest price to date for any American artist at auction.)

Lots of fashion designers collect art but Agnes b has also run a Paris art gallery for over 30 years. She is known for fostering special relationships with young creatives. As well as Basquiat, she also befriended Ryan McGinley and Harmony Korine early in their careers, and currently has her eye on New York street artist Jim Joe.

I spoke to her for Sotheby’s about how she got the art bug, her bond with Basquiat and her wall-whispering ways. Read the article here.

Agnès b’s exhibition On aime l’art opens at The Lambert Collection, Museum of Contemporary Art, 5 rue Violette, 84000, Avignon from 6 July– 30 September 2017.
