What he wants: a classic watch (that won’t break the bank)

Certain men are a nightmare to buy gifts for. I know, I live with one. But one of the safest things you can buy is a classic watch. They don’t have to be expensive, there are a few brands I like a lot that plug the gap between high street and luxury, are nicely designed and well made.

Uniform Wares is interesting because it has recently adapted its business model. The UK-based brand of clean, unisex timepieces is now positioned as a progressive luxury quartz brand, bridging the gap between mass market quartz brands and the quartz offerings by the likes of Tag Heuer, Cartier and Chanel. Shinola’s been in the news a lot lately since it opened its rather lovely little London store on Newburgh Street. What’s most enlightening is the quietly savvy strategy behind it. For instance, who knew that the brains behind it all is Tom Kartsotis who also founded the mass market watch retailer, Fossil? His approach of creating a story around the manufacturing and people of Detroit has helped imbue the two-year-old watch-and-accessories brand with a romance that really resonates with customers. Shinola watches arrive at Net-a-Porter

Shinola klaxon! Yummy new Shinola watches have just landed at Net-a-Porter. The Detroit-based brand is getting a lot of attention at the mo for its leather goods, paper goods, watches and own-brand cola (called Shinola Cola obvs).

I like the classic understatement of these. They’re just masculine enough, without looking overly butch. I like the size too. I have tiny wrists so I can’t get away with those gigantic dinner plate watches that everyone loves. You can buy them HERE.

“Women are the future of watches, there’s huge potential in women’s watches that is only half exploited today.” So said Jean-Claude Biver, head of LVMH’s watch unit earlier this year. He must be rubbing his hands this month as the summer influx of middle-Eastern customers arrive to shop up a storm at our luxury department stores.
