Thomas-Tait-ss15-Georges Rousse

The answer to the question “why do we still need fashion shows?” was answered succinctly on Monday with Thomas Tait’s powerpacked, techno-soundtracked stomper of a show. Fashion shows need emotion, energy and feeling in order to express something these days, the clothes are only part of the story. And so Tait created tension and anticipation in his concrete box of a location, with walls painted in collaboration with artist Georges Rousse setting an intriguing scene. Continue reading

My weekly DRG STYLE INDEX ranks the brand stories that have most resonated with me, in order of interest. This week includes Thomas Tait’s big break and how Vogue monetises its Insta feed…

1 SELFRIDGES BETS ITS MONEY ON IT BAGS

Selfridges loves a sweeping gesture and here’s one that’s hard to beat. It’s launching a destination accessories department which will see its luxury handbag offer double in size. (Does the world need more Celine bags? Clearly it does.) Continue reading

Quote of the day: Karl Lagerfeld

“Don’t insist too much about the young. One day they will be less young. And then people are not interested anymore because they’re not a young designer. Say ‘designer.’ If they’re good, they are ‘designer.’ If they are not OK, they need the word ‘young designer.’ In a way, it’s an insult.”

Day four is when things properly take shape at LFW with the heavy hitters showing the fruits of their labour. Alongside the international heavyweights Burberry Prorsum and Tom Ford, we had two newbies on the schedule. Blue Farrier made her debut as creative director of Issa London, while Maia Norman’s Mother Of Pearl presented at the ICA. Continue reading

Yasmin Sewell curates Beach In The East

Yasmin-Cho-Poland-Street

That photo above is from the Disneyrollergirl archives, AKA a pile of scrapbooks and box files containing years worth of photos, cuttings, and ephemera that I’ve held onto ‘just in case’. Yasmin Cho was a late ’90s shop on a first floor in Poland Street, an out-of-sight destination that you had to want to find in order to visit it. Run by Yasmin Sewell, it stocked a curated mix of under-radar labels like Susan Cianccolo, Carol Christian Poell, and Rick Owens. You had to press a buzzer to get in and the sign on the door was made up of coloured sticky dots. Fast forward 15 years and Yasmin Sewell’s early concept has come full circle with a Shoreditch pop-up space called Beach In the East. Continue reading

Buy it now: Spring picks

Posted on by Disneyrollergirl

I’m cautious with spring shopping as I don’t like to get too optimistic about the weather. So with the Fendi sleeveless blouse there’s a Thomas Tait leather jacket and to accompany the Theory shorts, an Ostwald Helgason sweatshirt. The Dries Van Noten lace-ups are an all-year-round option, as is the Chloe ring. (P.S, you might like to know that there’s free shipping on full-price merch over £100 at Farfetch until Thursday…)

LONDON FASHION WEEK AW12: DAY 3

Posted on by Disneyrollergirl

I tried to keep this brief but it didn’t happen so here goes. First up: Margaret Howell. You don’t get many surprises here but that’s OK. With some designers I like to know what I’m getting and for AW12 we’re getting the perfect white shirt, trad fairisles, fitted twinsets, schoolgirl box-pleated skirts, indestructable tweed trench coats (an update on my navy wool one that kept the biting chill out all weekend) and boyish blazers. To finish off – low side ponytails, penny loafers and darling little olive green Tam-o-shanter hats. Continue reading
