The DRG STYLE INDEX this week is all about the new launches and retail concepts launching for AW14. Here’s my ranking of the brand stories that grabbed my attention…
1. BELLA FREUD’S BRAND EVOLUTION
I know it’s only May but I can already tell we’re in for the autumn of Bella Freud. Her AW14 collection is much fuller then the capsule knits we’ve been used to and we’ll also see her first collab with Fred Perry. Plus this week saw a few Insta glimpses of the first proper Bella Freud fragrance collection (on the back of those delicious candles). Is it too early for Christmas wishlists? Continue reading
Wow, what a month May is looking to be for retail! Last week, Harrods opened its Pradasphere exhibition-café-shop-windows takeover, Fendi unveiled its 3-floor Bond Street flagship, Jigsaw’s Duke Street Emporium arrived in Mayfair and Selfridges just launched its summer ‘Beauty Project’.
An epic nationwide store concept (online and offline), The Beauty Project is a look at beauty, not just from a product point of view but in a wider sense, giving us experiential retail and discussions around how we see beauty. Continue reading
Here’s a great three-way collab that marries experiential retail with personalisation and a hand crafted approach to design. Last week, Jo Malone London invited me to experience its pop-up screen printing studio hosted by creative collective Calm & Collected. The arty foursome have designed special graphic labels for five of Jo Malone London’s favourite scents (yay, Pomegranate Noir is in there!) and as an added bonus the guys are screen-printing complementary boxes to go with. DROP EVERYTHING! Can we please take a moment to admire the beauty that is this Proenza Schouler X MAC collection? The packaging is as lovely as the products with a psychedelic yet sophisticated degrade effect on the boxes, pencils and brushes, as well as on the blusher compact itself. This little lot just landed at Selfridges…
Olfactory marketing is becoming more important as retailers try to appeal to all our senses. I love this idea from Fornasetti and Selfridges. If you pass their Christmas window – a hilly snowscape scene featuring a gigantic version of the Ortensia candle – you get a blast of Flora De Fornasetti emitted onto the street. Too fabulous!
It seems Brits love a beauty box, but whether that’s for the handy miniatures or for the Christmassy sense of unpacking all the goodies I’m not quite sure. Anyhoo, here’s two you need to know about if you’re a beauty box fan.

So have you been wondering how my 3X1 custom jeans turned out? Well I hope you like details because there’s a lot to take in. After my appointment at Selfridges with the 3X1 team at the beginning of August in which they let me modify their W2 Boyfriend jean with my choice of denim, thread, pocket details, buttons and zips, I took delivery of the finished article four weeks later. Like my Smythson experience, the choice was quite overwhelming at the time but the results are nothing short of superb. Continue reading
Selfridges is the undisputed leader of innovation when it comes to London’s department stores. While Liberty may be the go-to for a great edit and unexpected finds, Harrods for ultimate luxury and Harvey Nichols for the newest labels, Selfridges is the retail risk-taker and rule-breaker.
This summer’s big takeover has been all about denim, from the newly-opened £6 million Denim Studios on the third floor, to the fantastic windows depicting the nuances of every denim tribe you can think of. Got plans for next Saturday afternoon? Well cancel them and hang out with me instead! I’m teaming up with Selfridges to host one of their in-store workshops to celebrate the new Denim Studio and this one is for both hardcore denim geeks and those who still haven’t found their perfect jeans.
I’ll be teaming up with a member of Selfridges’ personal shopping team and one of their expert alterations team to discuss everything there is to know about denim and jeans. Think of it as an insider’s guide to denim. So if you want to know what the emerging trends are in denim (and the how and why), the secret to knowing what to look for in fit, cut and wash, what the limitations are in remodelling a pair of denim jeans (or dress or jacket for that matter), or you just want an opinion on what looks good on you, then please come and join our masterclass.
We will be in an informal hub in the denim personal shopping area so the aim is to make this more of a relaxed conversation than a lecture. The workshop is free, just email email@example.com to book a session – 2pm, 3pm or 4pm – on Saturday 6th July.
