All of a sudden, Brompton Cross is back on my radar. The Conran Shop is flourishing again (seriously, you can do all your holiday shopping there in one mammoth swoop), Joseph is getting better and better and there’s an influx of international fashion arriving.
Acne and Jil Sander Navy appeared rather quietly not long ago, J Crew’s upper-end collections have recently arrived in Draycott Avenue (somewhat overshadowed by the pizzazz of Regent Street) and Carven opened the same week. Continue reading
Farfetch continues its discovery and celebration of independent retail with the winner of its global Superstore contest. Le Mill in Mumbai is this year’s victor, winning the opportunity to sell a selection of its product on the site. Launched in 2011, by Cecilia Morelli Parikh, Julie Leymarie and Aurélie de Cort, Le Mill is a vast concept store in Wadi Bunder, housing international and Indian designers (Isabel Marant, Peter Pilotto, Savio Jon and Sabayaschi among them) alongside furniture, books, interiors and even flowers. Frankly, this looks like my kind of shop.
Le Mill is the first Indian store to be added to Farfetch’s global online marketplace, a coup that will bring awareness to the store from shoppers worldwide. My favourite pieces include Isabel Marant’s patent flats, 3.1 Phillip Lim’s sequin-scattered sweatshirt and Andraab’s raw-edged cashmere scarf…
Trending for ss14: the intersection between art and fashion. Oh yes, I’m well up for this. Ok, art and fashion have always been rampant bedfellows, but from here on in, I think we’re going to see a lot more fash-art hook-ups. Sorry purists but art just got fashionable.
To whet our appetites, we’ve had the Dior-Warhol collab for Aw13 and the art-inspired collection from Prada for ss14. Not to mention Chanel’s art gallery-themed ss14 show and the Chanel Bond Street store that’s practically an art gallery in itself.

Need a good reason to go to Harrods? Of course you do. Well here’s one: Valentino has created it’s very own pop-up shop to celebrate the unstoppable cult of the Rockstud. In situ until the end of the month, the Rockstud Rouge pop-up sells bags and shoes adorned with the famous pyramid studs, amid a selection of Valentino AW13 RTW in the expected shade of crimson. (Can I point out that the walls are studded as well…)
It bags may come and go but the Rockstud is in another league altogether. According to Harrods chief merchant Marigay McKee, “it has dominated the accessories market, growing in demand since its launch.” Continue reading
“Walk away now! Or you’ll have no money left!” These words were uttered only half jokingly by a customer stocking up with goodies at the brand new Charlotte Tilbury counter at Selfridges. Only hours old, the counter (there are two actually) was heaving with the curious and the product-hungry on a Monday afternoon.
This isn’t the first high profile make-up artist line launch but it is a biggie for the UK market. And this is how things are done these days. It’s not enough to be a ‘celebrity make-up artist’ now (what make-up artist doesn’t do celebs?), you need to be a high profile personality in your own right. So Youtube tutorials, magazine-quality blog, highly engaged social media following are all a given. And this is something Tilbury does really really well. Continue reading

Some interesting info just arrived in my inbox from Debenhams on the rise of the UK ‘Prom kings’. According to Debenhams, boys are spending 24% more on Prom prepping than last year, although still not as much as girls. While Prom has been a big deal in America for, well, ever, it’s only really taken off in the UK in the last 10 years. But jeez, has it taken a long time for retailers to catch on. Continue reading
