Menswear AW14 edit: fantasy shopping for Mr DRG

Posted on by Disneyrollergirl

It’s new-season new-in time at Mr Porter, so I couldn’t resist doing a little fantasy shopping for Mr DRG. There’s no question that I have to include a little Saint Laurent and Paul Smith in my edit, they both consistently deliver on cut, colour and print (this geometric pocket square is just jazzy enough in its muted colour palette). Sunspel‘s basics are another easy inclusion, you can’t get more classic than its loopback sweats in old-school navy. Sachajuan is a Swedish haircare line and I will confess it’s the packaging that’s speaking to me here. And for an understated sneaker that’s a step up from a Stan Smith, there’s no arguing with the grey suede Original Achilles from Common Projects

Raf Simons’ SS14 ad campaign has landed (and the first new season drop)

The Raf Simons SS14 campaign images are in! And although those boots are doing nothing for me, I absolutely love the half-half effect of the headshot and landscape graphics. The campaign was shot in Antwerp by Willy Vanderperre and styled by Olivier Rizzo…

Today’s the day – the Mr Porter sale is here!

Mr-Porter

The Mr Porter international sale went live today – at last! The US sale started a few days ago but I’ve had a look and there are still some crumbs left for the rest of us.

As usual, I’ve hunted out the pieces that I think work for both guys and girls, so here’s my edit of what we can steal. Personally, I’m all about the Raf Simons knit and the LVC pocket tee. A classic cotton pocket tee is stupidly hard to come by these days so I stockpile these when I see them…

Men’s grooming roundup: Stefano Tonchi, Tom Ford, Acqua Di Parma, Shay & Blue, Mr Porter

STEFANO TONCHI ON INTO THE GLOSS
Stefano-Tonchi

Oh my nosiness knows no bounds. I love Into The Gloss for its snoops into the bathroom cabinets of fashiony women and now it’s been sniffing around the men’s grooming shelves too. Here’s W magazine’s Stefano Tonchi’s thoughts on his grooming routine (Hmmm, Only 6 products but still)… Continue reading

Buy it now: lo-fi luxe

Georgia-Jagger-Netaporter

This week’s issue of The Edit from Net-a-Porter is all about lo-fi luxe. I always find it hard to define what my ‘personal style’ is but lo-fi luxe is certainly a good way to describe part of it. I like things that are comfortable and casual but I also appreciate quality and beauty. (In System magazine, LVMH’s Yves Carcelle describes luxury as, “something you want to use two years later, ten years later, a generation later”.) Continue reading

What’s in your man bag?

Whats-in-your-man-bag-Mr-porter

Who knew that men cared about what’s in other men’s man bags?* Well, it seems Mr Porter cares. This week there’s a feature on stylish, influential men and their ‘everyday carry‘ (kind of). Naturally, I’m all over it. Of course, it helps that Mr Porter has photographed the feature in typical house style – that means styled to perfection, with the latest desirable tech and grooming goodies in place. Mr Porter collaborates with young British designers for London Collections: Men

Posted on by Disneyrollergirl

Today, the second day of London Collections: Men, saw the release of Mrporter.com’s commercial collaboration to support independent British designers. Katie Eary, Sibling, Richard Nicoll and Matthew Miller each created three exclusive pieces for Mr Porter and every one of them is a thing of beauty. Continue reading

Buy it now: One for the boys

Posted on by Disneyrollergirl

Like me, Mr DRG likes nothing more than a bit of fantasy online shopping – oh the hours he spends on Mr Porter! So I asked him to make himself useful and compile a men’s edit for me here. I think he’s done a damn good job…

TOP ROW
Leather and stainless steel hip flask, Dunhill
Just the the thing for a gent in need of a little tie-straightener on the long winter nights

Plaid bomber jacket, PS by Paul Smith
Smithy comes up with a great wool bomber that gives a nod to Brando in On The Waterfront – and crucially, there’s no superfluous branding to mess it up

Muirfield 8 piece cap, Lock & Co.
Every autumn I buy a new cap and this year I plumped for a dark grey one of these from Lock & Co, the oldest shop in the UK. What else could you want in a cap?

SECOND ROW
Grey hurling sweater, Inis Meain
An excellent jumper from the Aran Islands that’ll last for years and go with pretty much anything – it’s only a matter of time before one of these arrives for me at DRG Towers

Ilkley black Scotch Grain brogue, Tricker’s
Unlike Crockett & Jones, Tricker’s always take several weeks to break in, but once done are comfortable as anything. No other company nails the proportions and shaping of a country brogue quite as well as Tricker’s do, and like any good quality Northampton shoe, you’ll be returning these to the factory many times for resoling

Coyote-trimmed down-filled Arctic parka, Woolrich
As a lad I was rather taken by the parkas worn by Rock Hudson and Patrick McGoohan in Ice Station Zebra, and this is a fine contemporary take on things. Perfect for a December evening, as DRG herself will attest, having bought a black one last year

Waris Ahluwalia on Mr Porter

How gorgeous is this Chris Floyd film of Waris Ahluwalia for Mr Porter? Those delicious crimson accents at the end…! These films are shot in a couple of hours, with minimal crew and no script. Impressive, no?

Guest post: What the menswear buyers bought for AW12

Posted on by Disneyrollergirl

It’s menswear day at London Fashion Week today, a slightly odd bit of scheduling as the men’s buying season is pretty much over by now. No worries though, menswear is getting its very own mini UK fashion week(end) from 15th -17th June, which will mean designers can maximise their chances of making the order books for SS13.
