Perfect pairing: Levi’s 501s and fancy flats

levis 501 Repetto

Stretchy skinny jeans are out and old school boy-cut Levi’s 501s are back in a big way, if my Pinterest feed is anything to go by. I wear my 501s with as few rips as possible and I get them custom hemmed at the Levi’s store to sit just on the ankle bone. Spring feels like the right time to switch my heavy-soled Church’s lace ups for my balletic Repettos with gamine ankle ties. On top I’m thinking puff sleeved Victorian blouses or something similar from MIH jeans, Chloe or Margaret Howell.

Repettos are best worn sans socks, but then there are the many options of fancy flats cropping up everywhere which look great with fine gauge Falke socks or fluffy cashmere equivalents. My favourites are pancake flat with a pointy toe and an ankle strap or T-bar.

Miu Miu, Tabitha Simmons and Bionda Castana are on my fantasy wish list, the more bejewelled the better.

Buy it now: the summer sale edit

Nigel-Shafran-Vogue

Bam! Nothing for ages, then all the sales start at once! Net-a-Porter, Matchesfashion, Liberty, Selfridges and Harvey Nichols all started their sales last week. I’ll be cherry picking my way through but to start with, here’s a quick pick of my current highlights. There’s a ton of Miu Miu and Isabel Marant on sale at Net-a-Porter but be warned, those sizes will go fast (there’s currently only one of these Miu Miu skirts left).

If you’re not over Rockstuds, Valentino’s leopard-spot flats are a bit different and now selling at 30% off at Matchesfashion. That Marc Jacobs ‘Coke-ribbon’ sweatshirt? It’s still kicking around and is 40% off at Net-a-Porter – yours for £720 (but there’s only one size left). And if you’re a lover of McQueen handbags, this red skull-padlock beauty can be yours for £470.01 at Liberty with 30% off. Shop the edit below…

I’m not a fan of sale shopping for the sake of it. I prefer to shop with a purpose so my sale strategy tends to be around useful pieces or one-of-a-kind things you’ll never see again.

Of the sale buys I’ve spotted already, the distinctive Miu Miu coat is only worth buying if you absolutely adore those spots (as I do) because it’s such a season-specific piece. But it’s a great standby for weddings etc and will look as good worn casually unfastened as primly zipped.

The Carven jacket is a good price for the quality and versatility (the faux fur collar comes off so you’ll still be wearing this come spring. Plus click on the picture and you can get another 10% off when you use the code XMAS10). And although the Dolce & Gabbana jewelled heels are still quite pricy, they’re worth it to me as it’s rare to find walkable evening heels that are such a dramatic talking point.

Chloe Sevigny for Miu Miu AW12 campaign

Chloe Sevigny’s the face of Miu Miu’s Aw12 campaign, making us nostalgic for the last time she posed for Miu Miu in 1996. I prefer the 1996 version; those flat planes of colour, sandals and slacks are suddenly looking quite contemporary and chanelling the vibe of Prada’s SS13 menswear collection. Will Miuccia take a cue from menswear for SS13 and deliver something similar for Miu Miu womenswear SS13?
