WIRED Retail 2014: My top 5 takeaways

This year’s WIRED Retail (supported by digital marketing agency Valtech) was a winning combination of all my favourite elements – fashion, retail, social and curation. We’ve been talking about these subjects a hell of a lot lately but certain messages are being crystalised. Among last Monday’s speakers were the founders of Lyst, Farfetch and RewardStyle, as well as Google UK’s Peter Fitzgerald, Etsy’s VP of business development Nicole Vanderbilt, Instagram’s Tracy Yaverbaun and Depop’s CEO, Runar Reistrup. Heads-up: Nike’s new Air Max Lunar1 trainer (£105) is here, an update on the original Air Max with new ultra-lightweight cushioning and mesh panels to make the cult shoe even more comfortable and flexible. Vanessa Friedman wrote about wearables in the FT yesterday, suggesting that tech companies need to get fashion people on board if they want their wearables to look halfway decent. I’d say Nike is ahead of the curve in this sense, it’s just released its Nike FuelBand SE in a very luxe-looking black version accented with rose gold. (more…)



Beauty futures: What’s new and next in beauty?

As you might have gathered, I love knowing what’s new and next when it comes to brands and retail and one of my favourite information resources is LS:N Global. The trends and insight network from The Future Laboratory covers global innovation from design, retail and lifestyle sectors and has a free blog called Seed *. Even better than the online content are the regular insight forums held at The Future Laboratory HQ in Shoreditch. Recently, I was invited to cover Beauty Futures, a jam-packed forum that focused on the beauty industry.
