This is a simple but clever marketing campaign I read about on WWD.
Amanda Wakeley‘s ‘on the bed’ editorial pages are proving to be a massive product driver, with featured items almost selling out. The online campaign shows outfits photographed on a bed, styled haphazardly in the way you and I plan what to wear on a daily basis. I loved Natalie Massenet’s talk at the Vogue Festival and the way she used Instagram as a modern alternative to a Powerpoint slideshow. Even better, people who weren’t at the festival could follow the presentation independently by viewing her specialy-populated Instagram feed, Nataporter_Mystorysofar (best viewed in the app).

Right, now that Vogue Festival is out of the way, the next Vogue event to diarise is the Met Gala, coming on 6th May. Especially if you’re a celeb-loving fashion fan. The red carpet arrivals at the Costume Institute benefit will be livestreamed next Monday at 7pm EST on the Moda Operandi, US Vogue, Samsung and Metropolitan Museum of Art websites. Continue reading

Pre-tail site, M’oda ‘Operandi has been going for quite a while now and even though I’m still a novice online shopper when it comes to fashion (honestly, I can count my total clothing purchases on two hands), I do think it’s a clever concept.
For me it works as a research tool. It bridges the gap between seeing things on the runway (styled to the hilt as per the designer’s vision) and seeing them on a rail in store. We get to see clothes ahead of season styled in a more wearable way, including those by some of the lesser known designers. This week’s ‘trunk shows’ (the M’O name for its limited-time pre-order sales) includes Bouchra Jarrar’s winter couture collection (a designer I love, who was shortlisted for the Balenciaga gig and M’oda ‘Operandi’s first ‘couture’ designer) and J.W. Anderson pre-fall.
But like a lot of start-ups, it seems the plan is to develop the concept beyond its original, well, moda operandi. Since December, the site has also offered conventional, in-season etail in its ‘Boutique’, giving the M’O consumer the option to buy their favorite pieces and wear them the next day. As CEO Aslaug Magnusdottir says, “We want to better serve our current customers and reach a new customer base. We’ve been able to establish a name in various pockets of the world and we want to take advantage of our positioning and build our market share quickly.”

Warehouse has upped its digital game considerably since relaunching its etail site a few months ago. As well as a much fresher looking site with the full complement of social sharing buttons, the British high street brand has embraced the power of the fashion film.
This sharply observed ‘Christmas SOS’ film, produced to promote its 90-minute delivery service (er – wow), is brilliantly executed and top contender to upstage last year’s Walk Of Shame viral (remember the work of genius from Harvey Nichols?).

Magazines swore they’d never do it. “Editorial is editorial; commerce is commerce,” they chorused. But things are different now. Harper’s Bazaar has just launched Shop.Bazaar.com in preview, a shoppable edit for the Harper’s Bazaar woman. In essence it’s a bit like Net-a-Porter in reverse. It has shoppable content curated via the pages of Harper’s Bazaar by its impeccably-pedigreed editors and is powered in partnership with retailers like Saks Fifth Avenue and Hirshleifers (Harper’s doesn’t hold any inventory itself; its fashion cupboards are big, but not that big), as well as mono-brands like Salvatore Ferragamo. I’ve just signed up so I’m having a play. Will report back…
More LFW extra-curricular activity came in the guise of the Shopbop Apartment in one of three spanking new-build apartment blocks next to the Tate Modern. In case you missed it, etailer Shopbop.com just unveiled its slick new site (with this v jolly video featuring cameos from New York’s funnest fashion luvvies) which now has bigger images, a redesigned mobile site, better sharing options and lots more editorial. In the post-Olympics afterglow I’m sure there will be thousands of people catapulted off the sofa into a life-affirming fitness regime. If you’re one of them (I’m not…yet), this might help get the pulses pumping. Newly launched WORKOUTLIFE.com hopes to be a bit of a game changer in the fashion-sportswear space, simply because it doesn’t want to be slotted into one neat box. Founded by Rebecca Quade and with design headed up by Ebru Ercon (formerly of Hussein Chalayan for Puma and Stella McCartney for Adidas), WORK OUT LIFE is all about multi-tasking for the overlapping areas of life, so think working out, workwear and everything else.
With her background in high end sportswear (as well as working on New Power Studio, her own line, and a collab with Asos), Ercon has brought a knowledge of cut and quality tech fabrics together to produce a collection of handsome pieces that tick multiple boxes. My favourite pieces from the website are the tailored ‘Gigabyte’ cropped trousers, the ‘Sidelined’ gathered mesh skirt and ‘Get Sophisticated‘, the poshest cropped sweatshirt you’ll see this side of the catwalk. Quade, a former marketing pro, is keen for the website to be more than just a clothes shop, her vision is for a global portal to promote a healthy body image in the fashion space.
