Will we ever tire of buying shoes? Judging by the last few years, it would appear our appetites are bigger than ever. Each shiny new footwear department (some big enough to have their own postcode), mall and ecom site just opens up more possibility, choice and downright longing.
Harrods’ Shoe Heaven floor has become a thing of legend and it’s only just opened. With 42,000 square feet of footwear fabulosity, you name it, it’s been bought in vast quantity to satisfy our insatiable fetish for the fancy and functional. Two years in the making, Shoe Heaven has three entrances, seventeen luxury branded boutiques and no end of options. Yes there are plenty of statement heels as you’d expect from a store whose glamorous overseas clientele scoops up Loubs by the dozen. But there are also thousands of flats, from affordable Kurt Geiger utility boots to the jewelled ballerinas adored by the Asian customer who likes her beauty and novelty served with a side of comfort.
Trainers? Of course. In particular, Isabel Marant’s cult sneaker trainers have a prime spot, because even if the fashion press are over them, the paying customer it seems, is not. Clearly, we’re a nation of feet-first dressers, so this shrine to our favourite pastime would be hard pressed to fail. In fact, the only downside is there’s almost too much to take in; be warned, this is not a department to whizz in and out of. But then why would you? If I haven’t made it clear, Shoe Heaven is a one-stop shop for the shoe obsessed. And the most impressive part is undoubtedly the bedazzling boutiques, created in partnership with the world’s biggest luxury houses (Vuitton, Dior, Prada, you know the rest…).
Despite its vast size though, Shoe Heaven feels oddly intimate thanks to the exacting eye of David Collins Studio, whose old school vision of luxury marries the killer combo of spaciousness with tactile velvet sofas and hand-knotted carpets…
Many brands have worked on exclusive product and colourways but really, it’s the sight of shoes and nothing but shoes in their mono-product design temples that impresses. If you get your kicks from wall-to-wall Rockstuds or a mirrored wonderland of Saint Laurent’s disco boots, then you really will be in shoe heaven here. For me though, the real fun comes with our favourite shoe visionaries. So Manolo, Prada, Louboutin and Charlotte Olympia are worthy of a Shoe Heaven trip alone.
You arrive at the Manolo Blahnik store up a flight of stairs (yep, an actual stairway to heaven) to find yourself in Manolo Nirvana. Louboutin is also jaw-slacking in its size and breadth. And Charlotte Olympia’s shelves (top and below) are a brilliant expression of Charlotte Dellal’s creative verve and attention to detail. Marvel at her Chinoiserie wedges inlaid with mother of pearl, cult kitty flats and ornate heels carved with dramatic dragons. And don’t think it’s only about the eccentric statements because Ms Dellal caters very well for those who like a walkable stiletto pump too. (Although admittedly she does win the prize for highest heels in the store – hers top out at 145mm).
What has Harrods got in store for the launch? Well nothing short of 37 specially made shoes under the umbrella of the Silver Lining Collection. There’s an exclusive pale silver version of the Charlotte Olympia Kitty flats, a high top sneaker from Chanel, Prada’s silver space-age studded wedge and Louboutin’s sexy metallic spikes. It all reeks of the extravagance, indulgence and a just-for-you attention to service that Harrods is renowned for. With increasing competition from other retailers and etailers, this idea of shoe heaven in a serious statement of intent to get the shoe obsessed stampeding through its hallowed halls.
One more sleep til the Christian Louboutin Beauté pop-up at Selfridges. As pop-ups go, I predict this is gonna be a biggie. To recap: Christian Louboutin is launching his beauty empire Christian Louboutin Beauté with an iconic red nail colour. To experience it in the flesh, head to Selfridges Oxford Street tomorrow (ideally not all at once) where you can buy the astonishing dagger-heel shaped bottles from a dedicated ‘Loubiville’ beauty space. The pop-up will be in the main beauty hall, in front of Shu Uemura (that’s next to MAC, and on the right hand side of the Information desk). Basically, just follow the hordes of red-soled fanatics. July is the month that the fashion and beauty brands unveil all their Christmas goodies. I try to avoid Christmas In July because I don’t work on a mag any more and frankly, it’s exhausting! But I do the odd department store press day as they usually have the best exclusives. Here’s my favourite from Selfridges: Diana Vreeland fragrance. I have more info coming but it’s the brainchild of one of Mrs Vreeland’s grandsons, it smells refined and luxe and goes on sale at Selfridges on August 21st. Continue reading
I’m not-very-secretly relieved to see the demise of the monopoly of the ‘plat-heel’ shoe. Those overstated stilettos with a stacked platform (also known as stripper heels) have just become ubiquitous on the high street to the point that it’s almost impossible to find high heels with normal soles. You may have seen the pictures of Kristen Stewart looking very grown up in Victoria Beckham’s tangerine dress and Louboutin Decollettes. But did you spot the bracelet? Of late, Stewart has switched up her grungy Converse-with-everything image for something way more pap-worthy, right down to the smallest detail. In this case, she’s become surgically attached to Cartier’s iconic Juste Un Clou (‘just a nail’) bracelet, the gold ‘bent nail’ that was reissued earlier this year from the depths of the Cartier vaults. Menswear focus: stylish Londoners get suited and booted at Burberry, Alexander McQueen and Selfridges
I literally can’t keep up with all the menswear retail goings-on in London this autumn. Just opened in Knightsbridge is another shiny new Burberry store (above), this time focussed on menswear. Craftsmanship and technology are given equal attention, with the store itself built by British stonemasons, carpenters, cabinet makers etc and over 50 speakers and 100 screens installed to engage the customer with digital experiential content. Further to yesterday’s Chanel post on the subject of the ‘Disneyfication’ of luxury retail; I hear that Harrods will be Disney-themed this Christmas. Swarovski was the brand partner last year and this year promises another fantasy-filled extravaganza beyond our wildest dreams. Think windows displaying one-off gowns for Disney princesses by the likes of Valentino and Versace, a fourth-floor Disney pop-up boutique, plus a special focus on Disney’s Cinderella to tie in with the global high-def launch of the animated Cinderella on Blueray.
In our modern cross-pollinating world, this is the perfect way for film, fashion and retail to collide to benefit all parties. (And somewhere in the mix there must be a magazine media partner ready and waiting with an Aurasma app to tie it all together. Harper’s Bazaar perhaps?) Disney has upped its fashion collabs considerably recently. I loved the Mawi jewellery, and the Cinderella Louboutins sound promising. Of course, I’m still holding out for a Louis Vuitton Disney collab. It’s got to happen soon, hasn’t it?

Sad but true: I have the heating on in July. Retailers are taking advantage by pumping out their early fall merchandise – jumpers, jackets and coats – to compensate for the lack of summer pick-up. You can’t blame them, winterwear makes more money than summer because knits cost thrice as much as tees. Ah well, here’s my early fall fantasy shopping list…
