We have been debating the ‘can Amazon work as a luxury retailer’ question for almost as long as the ecom behemoth has been around. Funny really, because that’s about the the same length of time as Net-a-Porter and we now don’t question the idea of buying say, a £113,000 Cartier watch online. And yet Amazon has struggled with its high fashion offer despite numerous iterations.

Could things be changing?

The latest attempt is Amazon Luxury Stores*, an in-app experience (U.S only) that recently offered two mini edits by former Colette retail whisperer Sarah Andelman. The ‘pop-up’ edits included products from L’Uniform (above), Charvet, La Bouche Rouge and Charlotte Chesnais. (more…)



Meet Finematter: Net-a-Porter for jewellery

Watch out Net-a-Porter, Matchesfashion and Farfetch; Finematter is the fine jewellery site coming to steal your crown.

I first got wind of the Danish DTC jeweller (pay wall) a few weeks ago. Founded by Caroline Chalmer and Mie Ejdrup, two retail strategy veterans, with influencer Pernille Teisbæk on board as a creative advisor, it’s the clean, serene jewellery etailer for the #OldCeline set and, crucially, the woman who buys fine jewellery for herself. Grenson X New Balance

The Grenson X New Balance men’s trainers that were unveiled at LCM get my tick of approval. They slightly remind me of when Hermes first did its ‘Quick’ trainer, an understated tan running shoe that was copied far and wide. I love that this is also a classic running shoe style; it’s my favourite 576 model reinvented in a rich Italian grade A calf-skin leather. (more…)
