Something about Sophie
I’m not really one for conceptual art; I much prefer pretty pictures. I make an exception for Sophie Calle though. Her art is about communication, rituals and relationships and she is (intentionally or not) funny as hell. She’s also French and reminds me of all (two of) my French friends – intellectual, dry-humoured, straight talking and mad as a box of, um, frogs.
Coming to San Francisco’s Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture in June is a major show, ‘Sophie Calle: Missing’, which will feature her famous project ‘Take Care of Yourself’ among many others. Closer to home, she is preparing for an October show at the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature in Paris.
Meanwhile, this New York Times article (sub req) is worth a read and I’m now off to hunt out the 2012 Sophie Calle documentary “Untitled,” directed by Victoria Clay Mendoza…
