THE DRG STYLE INDEX: Helmut Lang, Sephora, Mackintosh, Pat McGrath Labs and more!

Here’s the latest weekly DRG STYLE INDEX ranking, a round-up of the brands and industry stories currently buzzing on my radar…

1. HELMUT LANG’S RADICAL RELAUNCH

HELMUT LANG FALL 1999 RTW

The most interesting part to me about the new Helmut Lang structure, hiring an editor, instead of an overall creative director, is the plan for a regular reissue of archive Helmut Lang pieces. Proof that the 1990s designs haven’t dated a bit; I have a long list of favourites that I’d gladly purchase, even if they’re not originals. Starting with the silver trews above, from nearly 20 years ago…

2. SEPHORA GOES LOCAL

Sephora Studio Newbury Street
Sephora, the superstar of beauty retail as a neighbourhood store? Believe it. It has just opened Sephora Studio, a boutique format store in Newbury Street, Boston, surrounded by a Ralph Lauren store and homely coffee shops. But quaint as it sounds, it has all mod cons. Such as payment by phone only (no cash registers required) and beauty advisors who will take photos of your make-up try-outs and email them to you. It’s basically the anti-mall experience and is all about building a more personally engaged relationship with the brand. Expect 80-odd more stores to be rolled out nationally.

3. MACKINTOSH 0001 BY KIKO KOSTADINOV

Mackintosh 0001
Looking forward to September’s launch of MACKINTOSH 0001. The collection from the heritage outerwear brand will feature ten ready-to-wear unisex looks, the first from new creative director Kiko Kostadinov. I’m a big Mackintosh fan anyway, so I’m interested in seeing the new direction. The collection goes into Browns on 4th September.

4. PAT MCGRATH LABS FOR LIPS

Pat McGrath Labs Lips MatteTrance
Did you blink? Well sorry, you just missed the UK drop of Pat McGrath Labs’ lipstick line at Net-a-Porter.* I’m a bullet girl through and through, so I’m loving the design of these beauties, with their genius lip motif. (Sorry, I hate the tacky sequin packaging though.) *Sephora may have a few left…

IN OTHER NEWS…

Is anybody else living for Alex Steinherr’s Into The Gloss Top Shelf?

If you’ve ever bought one of Aesop’s pumice-infused ‘Reverence Aromatique’ hand washes or Parsley Seed Facial Cleansers, you’ll love this interview with Aesop founder, Dennis Paphitis. Sample quote: “The world does not need another ‘age-defying peptide’ piece of rubbish. We strive to be the delightful and dependable ‘constant’ in your bathroom, to deliver a product of great utility that extends joy, efficacy and assurance.”

Is Monocle magazine going weekly? Yes and no

That’s Not My Age has her second book out. If the inside of Know Your Style: Mix It, Match It, Love It is as fab as the cover, I’m sold.
