The Meaning of Things at The Gilbert Scott

What do you get when you gather a handful of fashion and beauty bloggers and editors around the chef’s table at The Gilbert Scott brasserie, accompanied by gin cocktails and a different wine with every course? A long and rather merry debate is the answer.

Three weeks ago, I hosted an evening at ‘the kitchen table’ of The Gilbert Scott, part of the wonderfully gothic St Pancras Renaissance Hotel in King’s Cross. Renovated in 2011 from George Gilbert Scott’s original Midland Grand Hotel, it’s one of London’s most dramatic landmarks.

The restaurant is part of the Marcus Wareing group and bills itself as a brasserie. “We know what we are and we’re not fine dining,” said the PR, although the outstanding service and beautifully presented Dorset crab and poached hake were a few notches north of Café Rouge.

To be discussed was The Meaning Of Things. Specifically, our relationship to ‘stuff’ – consuming and accumulating it, how and why? Lubricated by Nyetimber and Riesling, we covered the politics of outfit blogging, the wastefulness of beauty boxes, the rise of menswear blogs and the recent Holi One festival at Battersea Power Station – dubbed the ‘Instagram festival’ by us. (If you didn’t Instagram it, you clearly weren’t there.)

And naturally, we Insta’ed the hell out of our endless courses – some with more success than others

Thanks to my digital buddies, Style Slicker, British Beauty Blogger, That’s Not My Age, IsabelleOC, JonesTownLondon, Leisa Barnett from ElleUK.com and our hosts at the Gilbert Scott for contributing to a lovely and lively evening. And to finish off, who can resist a bit of zig-a-zig-ah on the Spice Girls stairway?
