Here are three killer red lipsticks I’ve been trialling that I can recommend if you love strong Hollywood reds in posh packaging…
First is Rouge Néon (shade 50) from Yves saint Laurent’s Rouge Pur Couture Golden Lustre line (below, £25). This is a lush vermillion red that has an extremely flattering finish thanks to the addition of yellow, white and pink gold pearls. It’s definitely not pearlised though; the effect is more a subtle ‘lit from within’ radiance that is YSL’s DNA. Obviously, the gold casing is as fabulous as the lipstick inside, I never get bored with it. Buy it here and here…
Of all my Gap Styld.By outfits, this is the one I’ve been wearing the most. Double denim is still sniffed at in most mainstream circles but I think if you wear it in matching or obviously contrasting colours/shades, then it can work really well.
I’m wearing Gap’s ‘Sexy Boyfriend’ jeans with a classic Gap denim jacket. Continue reading
I’m always interested in single-product brands and how they progress. It seems to me the sensible way to start out. Ralph Lauren famously started with ties, Alexander Wang with his capsule line of cashmeres and Palmer Harding are doing well with their inventive shirt-based pieces. Continue reading
Burberry has followed in Chanel’s footsteps when it comes to off-the-catwalk beauty. In fact, it has gone even further, releasing it SS14 nail colours well ahead of the curve. If you’re quick, you can order a set of its six spring polishes (£90) to be delivered within three weeks. (Deadline for placing orders is 30th September.) Continue reading
Part two of my Gap outfit posts are up on the Styld.by micro site. This look is mostly about the denim biker but I think it’s the red Sexy Boyfriend cords that gives it a kick up the butt. Continue reading
“What we were doing back then, was rewriting the rules of being white and working class. We knew exactly what it meant to dance to black music in the era of the National Front and the racist standup comedian. Ours was a rebellion against pub culture, shit music and leery sexist nightclubs. Our weapon was obscure vinyl, made by black kids nobody had ever heard of.”
Paul Mason’s recollections of the Northern Soul scene are a must-read on Vice.com
Chanel’s moiré-effect nail colours are getting a lot of love and they’re not even out yet! Released this Friday, the Rose Moiré and Rouge Moiré lacquers (£18) are inspired by the texture more usually seen on wallpapers and textiles. The Rouge Moire is especially dramatic with its intense car paint sheen. Once on I guarantee you will not stop looking adoringly at your nails. Continue reading
Valextra is about to get a whole lot more attention and I’m slightly torn. New design director Alvaro Gonzalez (previously at Jimmy Choo) has injected a glam fashion element to the Valextra SS14 offer with some shinier textures and softer shapes. Just look at the Trick Track in alligator below. I was always a fan of Valextra’s quiet modernist aesthetic so I’m hoping it won’t lose that, but I can’t deny that these bags are going to bring it more mainstream attention. (I have a hunch there will be more celebrity gifting too.)
Some of the designs showed up on Instagram. You can have a peek here…
So have you been wondering how my 3X1 custom jeans turned out? Well I hope you like details because there’s a lot to take in. After my appointment at Selfridges with the 3X1 team at the beginning of August in which they let me modify their W2 Boyfriend jean with my choice of denim, thread, pocket details, buttons and zips, I took delivery of the finished article four weeks later. Like my Smythson experience, the choice was quite overwhelming at the time but the results are nothing short of superb. Continue reading
Bobbi Brown’s Long-Wear Cream Shadow Stick (£20) has got to be one of the best chunky eye pencils around. The twist-up round-tipped crayon is the perfect thickness for rush hour application – just blend with a clean finger. I’ve been trialling Bittersweet, a limited edition everyday mocha from the new Rich Chocolate collection. It’s billed as a shadow or a smudgy liner but I think it’s a bit fiddly as a liner. As a long-lasting smoky shadow though, it’s foolproof.
