Sonia Rykiel has had a complete reboot under new creative director Geraldo da Conceição. For starters I think this AW13 ad campaign looks really fresh and strong – I love the use of illustration. Photographed by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, styled by Marie Chaix and modelled by Sam Rollinson, with art direction by m/m Paris, the inspiration comes from 1950s and ’60s advertising posters.

Selfridges is the undisputed leader of innovation when it comes to London’s department stores. While Liberty may be the go-to for a great edit and unexpected finds, Harrods for ultimate luxury and Harvey Nichols for the newest labels, Selfridges is the retail risk-taker and rule-breaker.

This summer’s big takeover has been all about denim, from the newly-opened £6 million Denim Studios on the third floor, to the fantastic windows depicting the nuances of every denim tribe you can think of. Along with Michael Roberts and Antonio Lopez, Tony Viramontes was a major influence in my early quest to be a fashion illustrator. His dynamic brush strokes and androgynous subjects are just as impactful now as they were in the eighties. Good to hear there’s a monograph coming out in October courtesy of Laurence King to celebrate the illustrator who died in 1988 at the age of 33.

A month before sees a 1stDibs.com sale of original Viramontes artwork and Polaroids, which until now have resided in the Viramontes family lockup in L.A. Mark your diaries for September 4th to snap up a gem or two…

Who doesn’t love a good, heartwarming music documentary? If you enjoyed Searching for Sugarman, you must look out for The Heart Of Bruno Wizard. I caught a screening at the East End Film Festival and am impatiently waiting for distribution news so I can see it again.

Bruno is one of those people that I’ve seen out and about and chatted to over the years but never quite understood what he does. The Heart Of Bruno Wizard is his story, told by first-time director Elisabeth Rasmussen. Of course, this isn’t really a music documentary at all but a heartfelt portrait of an artist. We follow his story from punk provocateur (he called his band The Homosxuals ‘to keep the record companies away’ – brilliant!) to artist, political activist and displaced Londoner. Cheesy as it sounds, The heart of Bruno does indeed come across. He’s an old school poet for the people in the same mould as Joe Strummer who never sold out and still carries his message in whatever art medium he can, to whoever will listen.

There are some excellent talking heads featured in the film, including fellow Warren Street squatters Stephen Jones and Marilyn. The music and archive home movie footage are fantastic too. You can get a taste in the trailer here

This month’s Vogue has a shopping page called Desert Storm inspired by Instagram-filter shades of tan, sand and parchment. For me it conjurs up Michael Kors ad campaigns (it’s Mario Testino’s tenth year behind the lens), Mykonos landscapes and the denim-and-suede-clothed staycations of my 1980s childhood. Thus blue and tan is my all-time favourite high summer colour combination. Shop the edit below…

Wishlist: A Child Of The Jago’s buffalo bowler

After years of being bodyconned to death, I’m soooo glad to see fashion taking a looser sportier turn. The nostalgia for the 80s/90s buffalo-grunge-androgyny years is certainly helping (although don’t mourn bodycon too much if you’re a fan, it’ll be back in a jiffy for sure).

Alongside the looser, boyish silhouettes, I’m drawn to these Fagin-esque A Child Of The Jago hats. This is the Buffalo Stance shoot in the current Vogue, a kind of buffalo-meets-hard-times-meets-Galliano mash-up in which A Child Of The Jago’s bulbous Wild Bill bowler features in every shot.
