Stylist magazine – first look

Posted on by Disneyrollergirl

Will this be the look of London’s new freebie fashion weekly? We’ll find out when it launches in a few weeks…

Updated 6th Oct 09: Saw a copy today but need to have a proper look before I give my verdict. Looks nice though…

Smiley culture

Posted on by Disneyrollergirl

Fashion’s going down the ironic nostalgia route in a big way at the moment. Barely a blink after the Barbie bonanza comes news of Smiley’s repositioning as a fashion force to be reckoned with. (Is it me or does Smiley relaunch itself on a yearly basis?) This time round it has got some top ideas up its sleeve starting with a hook-up with luvvie London designer labels, Louise Gray and Sibling to be launched at London Fashion Week. Louise Gray has an unnerving knack for teaming a bright colour with a sophisticated cut while the Sibling threesome have enough fashion credentials between them to fill a Goyard trunk, so pull out the stops I say.

Disney Couture’s posh-kitsch jewellery has been selling in spades to kidults like me who want to give cartoon graphics a grown-up spin, however tenuous. The clothing range looks set to follow suit with a heap of Mickey Mouse graphics on tops, tees and leggings. I am way too long in the tooth grown-up for these but I appreciate them doing something more creative than a tired old classic Mickey tee.

Liberty + Hermes ♥ scarves

Posted on by Disneyrollergirl

Fabulosity alert! Liberty and Hermes are joining forces to spread the scarf love with a pop-up Hermes scarf salon at Liberty. Now I’m slightly over the whole pop-up thing but for this I’ll make an exception. From September 7th for six weeks, you can buy one of six exclusive Hermes for Liberty designs marrying Liberty’s cotton Tana Lawn fabric with the zhuzh of Hermes. There is also a chance to win a one-to-one styling session with the creative director of Hermes silk. (Hopefully they throw in a scarf too.)

Fashion curators

Posted on by Disneyrollergirl

A recent post on Fashionista reveals that Rodarte are collaborating with Colette to curate a selection of their favourite things to show and sell at the cult Parisian store in October*. I’ve blogged about this type of creative retail concept before so I’m thrilled it’s finally happening for real. By the way, whatever happened to the rumour that Scott Schuman was doing something similar at Barneys?

Double trouble

Ah, how I love an implausible coincidence and this one’s a corker. My friend B asked if we could meet up as she had seen the perfect birthday pressie for me and wanted to give it to me early. “Don’t buy anything til I see you,” she implored. I promptly forgot and on my way to meet her had a scan of the Selfridges book department. (You can see where this is going can’t you?) My eyes clocked a book I had seen a few weeks ago in Waterstones and had been thinking about ever since. I snapped it up. Off I went to meet B, swinging my wee yellow Selfridges carrier bag. She arrived also carrying a wee yellow Selfridges carrier bag. Uh oh, alarm bells rang.

She handed me the bag, the present was wrapped inside. “Er B,” I said, “I forgot what you told me and I’ve just bought a book in Selfridges!” “Oh you didn’t?!” she replied eyes a-rolling. I opened her present and this was inside – the wonderful Like I Give a Frock by Michi. It’s the most whimsical, witty, pretty little book you’ve ever seen, full of silly musings and beautiful collagy illustrations. It’s totally me. So me that not only was it B’s gift to me but of course, also the gift I’d bought myself. Sorry B! Ah well, isn’t it lovely to have friends who know you inside out?

Diesel does dayglo

Posted on by Disneyrollergirl

Exciting news just in this week that my blog buddy Sophy Robson is doing the nails for Jeremy Scott at LFW. There is definitely a nail thing going on in London right now, and no event is complete without its nail artists in situ. Last week I was tempted down to the Diesel Flash for Fun launch (its glow in the dark collection that lands next month), not by free jeans and tees but by a free day-glo manicure courtesy of WAH Nails. Not only were the nail artists sweet and super-creative (no French manicures here) but something about the whole shebang with the little toy-like plastic fans on the tables (to dry the nails) and general hubub made the event far friendlier than your average hifalutin fash bash. Well, that and the fact it was held at the Dalston Superstore. In the basement you could see the clothes in action, glow-in-the-dark stitched jeans reminding me of Helmut Lang’s 1990s reflective dresses and trousers – *looks off wistfully into the middle distance* – anyone else remember these? But truly, the most fun was had upstairs where you couldn’t move for fash-bloggers – Isabelle O’Carroll, Fred Butler, Jaiden James and Rasharn Rva included. Honestly, the only fash-blogger missing was Miss Sophynails herself!

Where did I put my wet wipes?

It seems everyone is going to V except me. I don’t actually *do* festivals but still, I don’t like being left out. Maybe I’ll wear my Hunter wellies around town anyway, just for the hell of it. Hunter have sent me this welly pouch which I quite like, it straps onto your boots – kind of like a bumbag for wellies! What would you keep in your welly pouch?

GEEK ALERT: Polaroid party this evening!

Posted on by Disneyrollergirl

After I blogged about The Impossible Project last Sunday, I was more than a little surprised to receive an email to my non-Disneyrollergirl email address from Urban Outfitters about the same project. Turns out that Urban Outfitters is getting right behind The Impossible Project and supporting it with an exclusive event this evening. Urban Outfitters will be selling special edition Polaroid camera kits for £160 at the flagship store in Oxford Circus which include a limited edition tote bag. Not only that but there is an accompanying exhibition which explains all about The Impossible Project’s mission as well as showcasing some golden oldie Polaroid cameras from days gone by, including ones collected by Urban Outfitters’ own Rob Loeber who sources them from charity shops.

You can also buy packs of the last remaining Polaroid film (which you’ll need if you’re buying the camera – duh) but if you help back The Impossible Project you can save Polaroid film from extinction.

Get your geek on! If you’re quick you can also buy one of the specially produced tote bags for £10. Yay, Polaroid power rules!

Boys boys boys

Posted on by Disneyrollergirl

Step aside Agynes, Jourdan and the rest, the boys are muscling in. News just in of HERO, a new twice-yearly glossy showcasing the best male models from the international agencies. Not sure who’s behind it but anyone brave/crazy enough to launch a glossy mag in the currant climate gets my wholehearted support. Check it out here.
